Benediciton of a Black Swan by Mimi Zollars

Paperback: 128 pages
Publisher: She Writes Press
ISBN: 9781631529504

BENEDICTION for a BLACK SWAN, Mimi Zollars’s debut collection, explores the topics of childhood, children, marriage, divorce and alcoholism—as well as the sensual world—in a series of edgy, seductive, irreverent and ethereal poems.

Readers are captivated, calling Benediction for a Black Swan “eloquent,” “exotic,” “honest, “insightful,” “intimate,” “masterful,” “poignant,” “rhythmic,” “sensual,” “sultry,” “smooth” and “unpretentious.”

“Now this is poetry!” one reader yearns.

Incorporating elements of magical realism, Zollars’s sexy, darkly beautiful works embrace the miraculous as ordinary―and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

“A debut collection of poems exploring love, art, and loss. Some poets focus on the mechanics of poetry, such as intonation and rhythm, and neglect passion. This isn’t the case with Zollars, whose debut collection is a masterful study of how words can be sparingly hewn to create stunning, long-lasting emotional scenes―from a child’s fraught relationship with an alcoholic mother to the cold reality of professional beauty. Each poem offers a perfectly observed moment as seen through a slightly distorted lens, featuring personality, heartbreak, and the desire to bridge distances that can’t be named. A set by a brilliant new poet, featuring exquisite emotional nuance and an impressive mastery of craft.” (read full review)

“Like a wine or cognac savored at full maturation, still redolent of grapes and sunshine, these joyous, sensual poems encompass frank enjoyment of all the beauty, transgressive or not, that a fully lived life has to offer.” (read full review)

—F.J. Bergmann,

“The writing of Mimi Zollars pours into you like the most intimate lover, washing over your defenses, nourishing your Spirit, and firing up your Soul. Benediction for a Black Swan is for those among us who want to live and love raw and real like poets, even if we may not have a way with words. Pick it up when you yearn to be brought back to yourself. Drink it in like an elixir of warm milk and honey. It will sit on my altar of sacred writings, alongside my favorites of the ecstatic ancients, Rumi, Kabir, and Hafiz.”

—Jennifer Mizel, modern-day Mystic and Alchemist of the Soul

“Now this is poetry! Hauntingly romantic and sensual … This is a poetry collection I will keep in my bedside table to read over and over before falling to sleep in hopes of igniting my dreams.”

—J. Hill

“This poet excels at choosing the most beautiful words possible to describe even the rawest of emotions. Moving poetry.”

“This lovely, often disturbing collection resonates deeply; even the placement of the words across the white pages is poetry. Each poem is well constructed and controlled while remaining honest, insightful, and unpretentious.”

“I read Mimi’s collections of poems in one sitting. They were absolutely captivating. The language is so vivid and beautiful, whether she is writing about difficult life events, like alcoholism, or wonderful events, like time with a cherished lover. These are poems to be savored and read over and over again.”

—J. Ri

“Lush, sultry, sensual, transporting. I read one page of these poems to my husband, that’s all it took. I say read Zollars in small doses; savor the images and language like you would an eclair…I promise that you will relish coming back.”
